Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Adrian Dragu, MHBA

*born in 1973 in Germany

Prof. Adrian Dragu is a specialist in plastic, reconstructive and burn surgery with an additional qualification in hand surgery. He heads the Department of Plastic and Hand Surgery at the Carl Gustav Carus University Hospital in Dresden, Germany. His emphases include the treatment of burn injuries and reconstructive microsurgery. He carried out his education in Medical Studies at the Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany. Prof. Dragu has also completed a second course of study, graduating with a Master of Health Business Administration at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen, Germany.

His department in the Carl Gustav Carus University Hospital, The Department of Plastic and Hand Surgery, treats a variety of injuries and conditions in an interdisciplinary manner. A 24-hour Replantation Service is available for emergencies such as severely injured or severed body parts, particulary of the hand. The goal is, for example, to suture a hand severed in an industrial accident back in place as quick as possible and to preserve its function. This field of Prof. Dragu´s also includes the intensive medical care of thermal injuries, including burns of all degrees of severity, lightning injuries, chemical burns and frostbite.

At the same time, both areas of the department, intensive medical care and plastic surgery, complement each other perfectly. Plastic procedures are often performed following the patient´s recovery, in order to restore disfigured body parts functionally and cosmetically, if necessary, such as burn scars. Body contouring following weight reduction and breast reconstruction following treatment for breast cancer also fall within the responsibility of Prof. Dragu´s department. Here, for example, autologous tissue transplantation for breast reconstruction is utilised.

The specialist field of plastic and reconstructive surgery and hand surgery is also an active field of research and teaching. Prof. Dragu is a member of the Board of Examiners and participates in a leading capacity in research projects, such as in the field of obesity research and in research into chronic pain syndroms of the hand. He has conducted research in clinical and experimental analysis evaluating the perfusion of human tissue under NPWT and extracorporeal perfusion and oxygenation of different tissues in animal models. Prof. Dragu published so far several book chapters and has published more than 100 PubMed articles.
